Harris, William Torrey 1835- Educator; born in North Killingly, Conn., Sept. 10, 1835; studied in Yale University, but did not graduate. During 1857-67 he was principal and assistant superintendent in the St. Louis public schools; in the latter year was appointed superintendent, but in 1880 was forced by ill health to resign. In 1880 he was a delegate from the United States bureau of education to the international congress of educators in Brussels. On Sept. 13, 1889, he became United States commissioner of education. Dr. Harris founded in St. Louis the Journal of speculative Philosophy in 1867, and in 1901 was still conducting it. He was chief editor of Appleton's series of School readers, and editor of Appleton's Educational series. His other publications include: Introduction to the study of Philosophy; Hegel's logic; Critical expositions; and Psychologic foundations of education. See education, elementary.

rties, and the duty of co-operation rather more than the right of private judgment. The past century has been a period of theological agitation and upheaval in Protestant Christendom. The progress of physical science, the rise of the evolutionary philosophy, and the development of Biblical criticism have kept the theologians busy with the work of reconstruction. Germany has been the theological stormcentre. Kant's tremendous work had been done before the century came in, but Herder and Hegel and Schleiermacher were digging away at the foundations in the early years, and those who have come after them have kept the air full of the noises of hammer and saw and chisel as the walls have been going up. Much of the theology made in Germany has appeared to be the product of the head rather than of the heart; formal logic deals rudely with the facts of the spiritual order. of intellectual influence then most powerful in England, France, and Germany, were accessible and potent in America also. The writers who were then remoulding English intellectual habits — Coleridge, Wordsworth, Shelleywere eagerly read in the United States; and Carlyle found here his first responsive audience. There was a similar welcome afforded in America to Cousin and his eclectics, then so powerful in France; the same to Goethe, Herder, Jean Paul, Kant, Schelling, Fichte, Jacobi, and Hegel. All these were read eagerly by the most cultivated classes in the United States, and helped, here as in Europe, to form the epoch. Margaret Fuller, so early as October 6, 1834, wrote in one of her unpublished letters, To Mrs. Barlow. e Harvard Theological School at their Commencement reunion his Discourse on the latest form of Infidelity, which, by opposing Spinoza, Schleiermacher, Strauss, and Hegel, whom apparently Norton considered responsible for much Transcendental error, refutes Emerson by indirection, without mentioning him or taking explicit issue with or all in one direction, bade him oppose his strokes to each other, a procedure which has been accepted as typical of Bushnell's dialectic, and which is not unlike Hegel's. Contradictories merely led him to a higher resultant—a mystical synthesis and a sort of credo quia impossibile. He saved impossible dogmas by turning them into bjects suspended in a sort of Platonic solvent, conciliating opposites— not without sometimes confusing them. John Angell James, seem extravagant praise, we have only to remind the reader that the celebrated critic, Heinrich Heine, whom no one can suspect of partiality in such a matter, after describing his gropings and flounderings amid the uncertain and unsatisfactory speculations of German philosophy, tells us how at length he came to quit Hegel, and to quote the Bible with Uncle Tom,--came, too, to see that there was a higher wisdom in the poor slave's simple faith than in the great philosopher's dialectics, and found peace and satisfaction in kneeling with his praying brother, Uncle Tom. occasional letters from Boston, from New York, or Washington, about the gay world and people and places of note, about summer days and autumn glories, about art and poetry and religion. Eagerly asking whose they were, such readers came for the first time into glad relations with Mrs. Howe, and felt her to be a benefactor, for the true thoughts and bright pictures she had given them. The work of John Fiske, the leader of the evolutionary host, of Chauncey Wrig as Greek philosophy and fully exploited in all departments of human thought by Hegel, received a most impressive popular impetus from the work of Darwin and Spencere a priori conditions of all experience. In social philosophy Harris follows Hegel rather closely with a characteristic New England emphasis on the freedom of the not to be secured by external authority, but by free choice. Like his master, Hegel, Harris intellectualizes religion and art, the function of both being to revealy. It was through men of this class that the idealistic philosophy of Kant and Hegel was introduced into the American colleges. Typical of this class was G. S. ; in part, an effect of renewed study of the ancients, of Oriental Pantheists, of Plato and the Alexandrians, of Plutarch's Morals, Seneca and Epictetus; in part, the natural product of the culture of the place and time. On the somewhat stunted stock of Unitarianism,—whose characteristic dogma was trust in individual reason as correlative to Supreme Wisdom,— had been grafted German Idealism, as taught by masters of most various schools,—by Kant and Jacobi, Fichte and Novalis, Schelling and Hegel, Schleiermacher and De Wette, by Madame de Stael, Cousin, Coleridge, and Carlyle; and the result was a vague yet exalting conception of the godlike nature of the human spirit. Transcendentalism, as viewed by its disciples, was a pilgrimage from the idolatrous world of creeds and rituals to the temple of the Living God in the soul. It was a putting to silence of tradition and formulas, that the Sacred Oracle might be heard through intuitions of the single-eyed and pure-hearted. Amidst mate<
