h his purpose, he was forced to run himself into the mountains. The State of Connecticut has now in camp over three thousand infantry soldiers, three hundred and twenty-five cavalry, and one hundred and fifty-six artillery. The Government has in service two regiments of lancers, two composed entirely of lumbermen, one of miners, one of railroad men, one of miners, one of railroad men, one of engineers and bridge makers, and one of mechanics. The United States armed transport McClellan, Capt. Gray, leaves the foot of Canal street this morning, under sealed orders.--This is one of the vessels belonging to the Government which has the right man, whose ship is always in the right place at the right time. The Port Surveyor has seized the ship Kate Dyer, two sixteenths of which are owned by James Philip, of New Orleans. gans that no effort shall be wanting to lower the present price of bread. It is its apprehensions on this head that renders it so anxious about the cotton supply, the assurance of which it sees only in a recognition of the rebel States. A complete understanding exists between England and France on the subject, and any disaster to the Union army will be followed instanter by an acknowledgement of the South. Nay, I am by no means sure that even a victory and rout under the auspices of General McClellan would alter the matter. The Orleans Princes have caused a great outcry in Europe. The English press cannot forgive them for siding with the Northern States in the present struggle. The other gaps, however, seem to have been neglected, and yesterday we had rumors that a large Lincoln force was approaching Jamestown, Sentries county, and that McClellan's Cavalry Battalion had fallen back from that point. If they make their entrance there, it is probable their aim will be the bridge at Loudon, the destruction of which would be a most calamitous blow to us. Rockingham items. The Rockingham Register, of the 8th, furnishes the following items: At the Shenandoah Iron Works, owned by Henry Forrer, they are engaged on a contract with the Government, and are turning out cannon shot of all kinds by the ton.
