The Legislature.
Senate.--Mr. Douglas, from the Military Committee, asked to be discharged from the further consideration of the resolution for repealing the law exempting militia officers from service.
The bill for the relief of Brigadier-General Alfred Beekley was rejected, and the vote subsequently reconsidered and the bill tabled.
A resolution of inquiry for exempting inspectors of tobacco was adopted.
On motion of Mr. Collier, a resolution was adopted inquiring whether any and what legislation is requisite to preserve and enforce the writ of habeas corpus. Also, one inquiring whether there is constitutional competency in the Confederate Government to pass any law to suspend the writ of habeas corpus so as to restrain a State Judge from awarding the writ in a proper case.
Adjourned.
In the House, the Senate bill reorganizing the State Penitentiary was discussed and passed by a vote of ayes, 100; noes, none.
