pointed amphora
A variation of the neck amphora with a tall and narrow neck resting on the body which is broad-shouldered, ovoid and tapers to a point at the bottom. Shape: This type of base permitted the vessel to be set in a ring-stand. The lip occurs in several shapes, the most frequent being cup-shaped or convex. The handles tend to be cylindrical in section. There is usually a raised ridge at the join of the shoulder and the neck. History: This shape is rarely produced during the red-figure period. Vases with this shape appear frequently in vase painting (e.g. Musee Cinquantenaire, Brussels, no. 2190).
