[1176] ἵππους δαίτρευον: the Armenians sacrificed horses (Xen. An. 4. 5. 35); so too the Massagetae (Hdt. 1. 216). "Horse sacrifices are said to prevail among the modern Parsees" (Rawlinson).
ἐπηετανὸν κομέουσαι: 'of which they tend unfailing herds'; cf. Od. 7. 99, πίνοντες καὶ ἔδοντες, ἐπηετανὸν γὰρ ἔχεσκον. Curtius derives ἐπηετανόν from ἐπί and αἰεί (Boeot. ἠΐ), the ending being the same as the Lat. -tinus. de M. tr. "elles sacrifiaient des chevaux qu'elles avaient nourri pendant une année," following the old deriv. from ἐπί and ἔτος.
