"The old Currency."
--The Petersburg
Express has exhumed some old bank notes of 1816. One is a note for 25 cents, "receivable at the Bank of Virginia," signed by Anta
Robinson.
One is a shinplaster issued by the Corporation of
Richmond, agreeable to an ordinance passed by the Council, bearing date 6-10-16">October 16, 18 6, and "good" for "twelve and a half" cents.
The "Corporation of
Richmond" promises on the face of this note, in very emphatic language to pay to bearer the sum of 12½ cents, but the note was never redeemed — These notes bear a striking resemblance to the little shinplasters which a short time since were so plentiful here, and remind us of the fact that the people in 1816 were as "hard up" for good currency as we are now.
