Averill's Raid — Attack at Dublin Depot.

A telegram was received at the War Department yesterday evening, announcing that Averill, with a very large force of mounted infantry, had the day before attacked the Confederates under Gen. Jenkins, at Dublin Depot, in Pulaski county, and after a severe engagement forced them to fall back to this side of New river.

On our side Gen. Jenkins was wounded, Col. Hand was killed, Maj. Tyler wounded and a number of other officers killed and wounded. Among the wounded was Lieut Col. Thomas Smith, a son of Gov. Smith, who fell shot through the thigh while gallantly leading his regiment — the 36th Virginia infantry. He was left at the house of Mr. Guthrie, three miles from Dublin, and fell into the hands of the enemy.

All the Government stores at Dublin were brought off in safety.
