I´SMARUS (
Ἴσμαρος), a mountain rising on the east of lake Ismaris, on the south coast of Thrace (Virg.
El. 6.30,
Georg. 2.37; Propert. 2.13. 5. 3.12. 25 ; Lucret. 5.31, where it is called Ismara, as in
Verg. A. 10.351.) Homer (
Hom. Od. 9.40,198) speaks of Ismarus as a town of the Cicones, on or at the foot of the mountain. (Comp. Marc. Heracl. 28.)
The name of the town also appears in the form Ismaron. (
Plin. Nat. 4.18.)
The district about Ismarus produced wine which was highly esteemed. (
