CUSAE
CUSAE (
Χοῦσαι, Aelian, H. An. 10.27;
Κάσος or
Ἀκούασα, Hierocles, p. 730), the modern
Kusieh, was a town in the Lycopolite nome of the Thebaid.
In the Notitia Imperii it is noted as the head-quarters of the Legio II. Constantia Thebaeorum.
The goddess Aphrodite Ourania was held in especial reverence at Cusae under the symbol of a white cow. (Aelian,
l.c.) At a later period it was an episcopal city.
There appears to have been another town of this name in the Hermopolite nome of the Heptanomis.
