SERIA´NE
SERIA´NE a city of Syria mentioned in the Itinerary of Antoninus as xviii. M. P. distant from Androna, which was xxvii. M.P. from Calcis, cxxxviii. M.P. from Dolicha, now
Doluc. (
Itin. Ant. pp. 194, 195.) Mannert thinks that it corresponds in situation with the Chalybon (
Χαλυβών) of Ptolemy (
5.15.17), which gave its name to a district of Syria Chalybonitis.
It is certainly identical with the modern
Siria, 2 long days SE. of
Aleppo, in the desert, the ruins of which were discovered and described by Pietro della Valle. (Mannert,
Geographie, part vi. vol. i. p. 411.)
