SETA´NTII
Eth.
SETA´NTII (Eth.
Σετάντιοι,
Ptol. 2.3.2), a tribe probably belonging to the Brigantes on the W. coast of Britannia Romana, and possessing a harbour (
Σεταντίων λιμήν, Ptol.
l.c.), commonly thought to have been at the mouth of the river
Ribble. Reichard, however, places it on the S. coast of the
Solway Frith, while Camden (p. 793) would read, with one of the MSS. of Ptolemy, “Segontiorum Portus,” and seeks it near
Caernarvon. [
