FLANATICUS SINUS
FLANATICUS SINUS (
Plin. Nat. 3.19), or FLANONICUS (
Φλανωνικὸς κόλπος, Steph. B. sub voce the gulf on the N.W. coast of Liburnia, which derived its name from a people called the FLANATES (
Plin. Nat. 3.21).
There was a town called FLANONA (Plin.
l.c.; Ptol. 2.16.2,
Fianona), between Alvona and Tarsatica.
It is now called
Canal del Quarnéro, well known for its dangerous navigation. (Wilkinson,
Dalmatia and Montenegro, vol. i. p. 48; Neigebaur,
Die Süd-Slaven, p. 249.)
