The Memorable week.

The week which closed on Wednesday last was one of great events. It settled the fate of this city, and saved the Confederacy from an amount of embarrassment and trouble which can hardly be overestimated.

History hardly records a week of greater struggled and more brilliant victories. Certainly there has never been known a series of more intrepid and perilous assaults than those made by our brave troops. There could be no superior display of unflinching bravery and resolution than that exhibited by our men when rushing to the assault of fortification and battery for the six days, and along the whole extended line of the enemy's entrenchments, covering a space of some twenty miles. The army of the adversary was far the most powerful he has yet equipped — supplied with every description of arms and ammunition, and every appliance of war for siege and assault. His numbers we know not; but they must have been in the neighborhood of a hundred and fifty thousand. With great industry and scientific skill, he had fortified his immense line — a labor which he had pursued for two months. This army, thus equipped and fortified in chosen positions, most difficult and perilous to approach, our army of patriots have attacked and routed at every point — driving him from every position, taking his last fortification, and forcing him to seek safety in flight.

When the true history of the grand achievements of this week is written, it will command the admiration of the world.
