The distresses of New Orleans under the dominion of Butler are absolutely appalling. The bombardment of the city by Farragut would have been mercy itself compared with what its people have had to endure from the demon in human form whom Lincoln has selected to torture them to the last extremity. The fate of the city should be a warning to all Southern cities, never to dream of surrender. Better that not one city should be left in the South than that the scenes of New Orleans should be repeated in any other locality. As for Butler, we fear that he will never receive his deserts in this world. Such immeasurable villains are generally sent on by the decrees of Providence to a more fearful tribunal than any that earth affords.
