OPHOVEN Belgium.

Gallo-Roman vicus on the left bank of the Meuse along the Tongres-Nijmegen road. The vicus is in the hamlet of Geistingen. Systematic excavations have never been undertaken there, but scattered finds and investigations have revealed foundations, remains of smelting furnaces for the local production of iron out of the limonite in the marshes, five wells lined with wood, many potsherds, fibulas, glassware, pieces of grindstones, etc. Most of the finds date to the 2d and 3d c. A.D., but sherds of late Gallo-Roman pottery have also been found.
