LIGO

LIGO (δίκελλα or μάκελλα) was a hoe formed either of one broad iron or of two curved iron prongs fixed at right angles to the handle, which was used by the ancient husbandmen to clear the fields from weeds. (Ovid, ex Pont. 1.8, 59; Mart. 4.64; Stat. Theb. 3.589; Col. 10.89.) The liqo seems also to have been used in turning up and breaking the clods. (Hor. Carm. 3.6.38; Epist. 1.14, 27; Ovid, Amor. 3.10, 31; [p. 2.67]compare Dickson, On the Husbandry of the Ancients, i. p. 415.)
