BETHAGLA

BETHAGLA (Bethhogla), a town of Palestine, in the plain of Jericho, on the borders between the tribes of Judah and Benjamin, but reckoned to the latter. (Josh. 15.6, 18.19, 21.) St. Jerome identifies it with the threshing-floor of Atad (Gen. 1. 10, 11), the scene of the mourning for Jacob. (Onomast. s. v. Area Atad.) A fountain named ‘Ain Hajla, and a ruined monastery, Kusr Hajla, situated about two miles from the Jordan, and three from the northern shore of the Dead Sea, still preserve the name and memorial of this site.
