CUTATISIUM
CUTATISIUM (
Κουτατίσιον, Procop. B. G. 4.13, 14), a small town in Colchis, on the river Phasis, now
Kchitais or
Kutais. It was identified with the mythical Cytae or Cytaea, said to have been the birthplace of Medea (
Steph. B. sub voce Pin. 4.12. s. 26), whence the adjectives Cytaeaeus and Cytaeus, used in reference to Medea and Colchis (Propert. 1.24;
V. Fl. 6.693). Scylax, on the other hand, states that Mala, on the same river, was entitled to that honour.
