DALMANU´THA

DALMANU´THA (Δαλμανουθά). The name occurs only in St. Mark's Gospel (8.10), where the parallel passage in St. Matthew (15.39) has Μαγδαλά, which enables us to identify the district of Dalmanutha with the plain of Gennesareth, to the S. of which Magdala was situated. Lightfoot (Chorog. Dec. cap. 5.2) offers several suggestions as to the origin of the name, but none of them satisfactory.
