DIOCAESAREIA
DIOCAESAREIA (
Διοκαισάρεια: Eth.
Διοκαισαριεύς).
1.
A place in Cappadocia near Nazianzus.
According to Gregorius of Nazianzus, it was a small place.
It is mentioned by Ptolemy (
5.6); and by Pliny (
6.3), who gives no information about it. Ainsworth, on his road from
Ak Serai to
Kara Hissar, came to a place called
Kaisar Koi, and he observes “that by its name and position it might be identified with Diocaesarea.” (
London Geog. Journal, vol. x. p. 302.) Some geographers take Nazianzus and Diocaesareia to be the same place.
2.
A town of Cilicia Trachea, mentioned by Ptolemy (
5.8) and the ecclesiastical authorities. Leake (
Asia Minor, p. 117) supposes that it may have been between Claudiopolis (
Mout) and Seleuceia (
Selefke). [
