DIVI´TIA

DIVI´TIA (Deutz), a fort opposite to Colonia Agrippina (Cologne), which was erected for the purpose of protecting the bridge across the Rhine, and was occupied by a permanent garrison (milites Divitienses; Amm. Marc. 26.7, 27.1.) In the middle ages it was called Duizia, whence the modern name Deutz.
