DIVI´TIA (
Deutz), a fort opposite to Colonia Agrippina (
Cologne), which was erected for the purpose of protecting the bridge across the Rhine, and was occupied by a permanent garrison (
milites Divitienses; Amm. Marc. 26.7,
27.1.)
In the middle ages it was called
Duizia, whence the modern name
Deutz. [
