GA´LLICUS SINUS

GA´LLICUS SINUS (ὁ Γαλατικὸς κόγπος, Strab. p, 137: Golfe. du Lion) was the Roman name of the bay of the Mediterranean, formed by the south coast of Gallia Narbonensis. It was also called Mare Gallicum. (Plin. Nat. 3.5.) The western limit was the Pyrenees Promontorium (Liv. 26.19); the eastern may be fixed near Massilia, and the bay was sometimes called Massaliotic. Strabo gives the same name to the opposite bay on the Atlantic, which is formed by the north coast of Spain and the south part of the Atlantic coast of Gallia; but no other writer seems to have given the name to the Atlantic gulf.
