Death of a worthy man.

We learn from Staunton that Colonel Hierome L. Opie, of Augusta, died at his residence in that county on the 21th. Col. O. was a native, and until within the last eight years a resident, of Jefferson county, and at one time represented the Jefferson and Frederick district in the Senate of Virginia.--On the day of the battle of Cross Keys, a report reached Staunton that the enemy, in small force, was endeavoring to cross the river at Mr. Crawford, upon hearing which Col. O. rode to town with a view to rally his neighbors and friends to organize and resist their advance. In an effort to mount his horse, he fell back, or was thrown, against the side walk with such force as to fracture his right leg below the knee in two places, the bones lacerating the flesh, and producing a wound which eventually resulted in terminating his life.

Col. Opie was a man scrupulously correct in his relations with his fellow men, and always observed the most delicate regard for the feelings of others. His loss will be keenly felt in the community of which he was an honored member, but nowhere will the tidings of his death produce more profound sorrow than among his old friends of his native county.
