Huckstering.

--The high prices of all the necessaries of life, made higher every day by the forestalling of speculators, has set the City Council to work to see if any remedy can be adopted. At their last meeting a resolution was offered by Mr. Scott and adopted, instructing the Committee on Markets to inquire into the expediency of so amending the ordinance as to prohibit what is called "huckstering," and also to inquire into the propriety of authorizing the sale of market produce at the place where it is discharged.

By a combination of the hucksters marketing of every kind can be kept at the highest notch, and this can only be prevented by prohibiting huckstering altogether. It will be difficult to frame an ordinance to do away with the evil entirely, but much may be done by increasing the punishment and by prohibiting ever afterwards all converted violators of selling in the markets through agents or otherwise. What the committee will report remains to be seen.
