The case is inclosed so as to exclude all other light, and the beam is reflected by the mirror upon a traveling slip of paper indicating the extent and time of barometric changes. Baro-ma-crome-ter. Bark, although used extensively by the natives of some of the islands of Polynesia, has not come into general use for raiment elsewhere; but few trees yield a bark which will make clothing equal to the tapa cloth of the Fijis. This is made from the paper mulberry, which grows wild in Oceanica and Polynesia, as well as in parts of Asia. The Fiji group is near the equator, and was discovered in 1643 by Tasman, the Dutch navigator. There are 225 islands, 80 of which are inhabited by a population estimated at 250,000. Paper is also made of the same material (Broussonetia), and specimens are in the Patent Office and Agricultural Department Museum. The masi cloth is made by the same islanders, of the bark of the malo-tree. The bark, as removed from the tree, is steeped in water, and beaten on a flat log with a grooved mallet. It is also known as demi or half-relief, and is a grade between alto-rilievo or high-relief, and basso-rilievo or low-relief. See rilievo. Mez′zo-tint-en-grav′ing. The inventor of this art is believed to have been Colonel Ludwig von Siegen, a lieutenant-colonel in the service of the Landgrave of Hesse Cassel. Portraits executed by him exist, having the date of 1643. Prince Rupert gave so much attention to it, and was so instrumental in bringing it into favor, that he has been credited with the invention. Sir Christopher Wren has also been cited as the inventor, but his claims are antedated by Prince Rupert. He had previously been in the habit of collecting information and circulating news-sheets among his patients. The first German newspaper was established at Frankfort in 1615. An illustrated war gazette, the Niewtijdinge, published in the Low Countries, had, however, preceded this by ten years. In Sweden, a newspaper was published as early as 1643, entitled the Ordinarie post Tidende. Journalism in Spain and Italy, owing to the lack of general education, and restrictions on the liberty of the press, has, until recently at least, remained in rather a backward state.
