οὔκ: this refers, not to any particular words, but to the whole idea of what precedes; equiv. to οὐ ποιήσετε τοῦτο. Cf. iii. 66. 19.

ἀπὸ τοῦ ἴσου: this belongs with ἀγών, and is opp. to πρὸς τοὺς κρείσσονας πολλῷ: “with equal forces.” See on i. 77. 8.

ὀφλεῖν: with Bekker and others against the authority of the Mss., which read ὄφλειν. The sense (“not to fall into disgrace”) demands the aor. (of pres. ὀφλισκάνω).— βουλή: this is substituted for ἀγών as if to exclude the notion of a decision by violence.
