Dawes, Henry Laurens, 1816-

Statesman; born in Cummington, Mass., Oct. 30, 1816; [25] graduated at Yale in 1839; admitted to the bar in 1842; served in the State legislature in 1848-50, and in the State Senate in 1850-52; member of Congress in 1857-73, and of the United States Senate in 1875-93; and then became chairman of the commission of the five civilized tribes. He is the author of many tariff measures, and also of the system of Indian education, and to him is due the introduction of the Weather bulletin in 1869.
