Orne, Azor 1731-1796

Military officer; born in Marblehead, Mass., July 22, 1731; was a successful merchant and an active patriot, a member of the Massachusetts Provincial Congress, and long one of the committee of safety. In organizing the militia, and in collecting arms and ammunition, he was very active. In January, 1776, he was appointed one of the three Massachusetts major-generals, but did not take the field. For many years he was a member of the State Senate and council of Massachusetts, and was a zealous advocate of education. He died in Boston, June 6, 1796.
