Extent and power of the South.
--The Southern Confederacy, as it now exists in effect — as we consider that
Tennessee,
North Carolina and
Virginia are, to-day, as much members of the
Confederacy as any of the States--has an area in square miles, and contains a population as follows:
| area. | population. |
Virginia | 61,352 | 1,596.3 |
North Carolina | 59,704 | 992,667 |
South Carolina | 29,386 | 703, |
Georgia | 68,000 | 1,957,327 |
Florida | 59,268 | 140,439 |
Alabama | 50,722 | 264,220 |
Mississippi | 47,150 | 791,395 |
Louisiana | 41,255 | 709,433 |
Texas | 237,584 | 601, |
Arkansas | 32,1 | 435,427 |
Tennessee | 45,609 | 1,101,84 |
total | 733,144 | 9,102,847 |
the statistics of the four other Southern States are:
| Area. | Population |
Kentucky | 37, | 1,165,743 |
Missouri | 61,380 | 1,173,307 |
Maryland | 11,124 | 687,624 |
Delaware | | 112,218 |
Total | 118, | 3,,252 |
A united South, is, we believe, the inevitable result of the political convulsion now agitating the country.
Should this be accomplished, the extent of the
Confederacy would be 851,448 square miles, and the population 12,240,047.,
