χρὴ δ᾽ οὐκ ἀγαπᾶν, εἰ κτἑ, ‘you must not be content with being already superior to those around you.’ τοιοῦτος . . . τὴν φύσιν . . . τοιούτου τὴν ἀρετήν: cp. § 19 τηλικαῦτα τὸ μέγεθος and note. τὸ μὲν παλαιὸν . . . τὸ δ᾽ ὑπογυιότατον, ‘distantly . . . immediately,’ adverbial accusatives. ὑπόγυιος, lit. ‘under the hand’, so ‘recent’, ‘fresh’. ἐπὶ σοί, ‘in your power’; cp. Paneg. 142 τὸ ἐπ᾽ ἐκείνῳ, ‘as far as in him lay.’ ἐπιδιδῷς: see note on § 7 ἐπιδόσεις.
