Naval officer, born on
Bull's Island, S. C., Oct. 31, 1790; entered the navy as midshipman in 1806; was made lieutenant in January, 1813, and in June assisted, by managing a small battery on
Craney Island, in repulsing the
British.
Shubrick was lieutenant of the
Constitution in her action with the
Cyane and
Levant.
He commanded a squadron in the
Pacific in 1847, and captured some ports from the Mexicans.
In 1859 he was in command of the Brazil Squadron and the
Paraguay expedition,
and from 1860 to 1870 was chairman of the light-house board.
He was made rearadmiral on the retired list in July, 1862.
He died in
Washington, D. C., May 27, 1874.
