State of Wyoming,

Erected from Wyoming Territory, which was formed by act of Congress in 1868 from portions of Dakota, Idaho, and Utah. The first settlement within its borders was made in 1834 at Fort Laramie. The first agricultural settlers were a company of Mormons, in 1853. When the territory was created, in 1868, it had only 3,000 white

inhabitants. It was admitted as a State in 1890, with a land area of 97,575 square miles. The Constitution provides that men and women shall have equal right to vote. The capital, and largest city, is Cheyenne, also the county seat of Laramie county. Population in 1890, 60,705; in 1900, 92,521. See United States, Wyoming, in vol. IX.
