Daly, Charles Patrick, 1816-

Jurist; born in New York City, Oct. 31, 1816; admitted to the bar in 1839; elected to the New York Assembly in 1843; became justice in 1844, and chief-justice of the Court of Common Pleas in 1871; president of the American Geographical Society for more than forty years. Among his writings are History of Naturalization; First settlement of Jews in North America; What we know of maps [6] and Map-Making before the Time of Mercator, etc. He died on Long Island, N. Y., Sept. 19, 1899.
