1 The names and facts in this list are taken from the Massachusetts Adjutant-General's Report (January, 1866), pp. 83-85. The rank attributed to officers is in some cases that of a State commission issued, to which the officer was never actually mustered. There was no Captain Johns in the 49th Infantry, but the officer named is probably Brevet Capt. H. T. Johns of the 61st, who was originally a member of the 49th, and may have marched with it on this day.
