Arrested for Forgery.
--On Saturday last a man named
Jones was arrested in this city on the charge of forging officer's pay rolls, and obtaining money thereon.
He was committed to the military prison of the city, where he will, perhaps, remain until the time arrives for an impartial hearing of his case.
Jones has figured rather conspicuously in this city within the past six months. He was last spring charged by
Capt. Dean, a Quartermaster in the
Confederate service, with robbing him of some seven thousand dollars, at the
Richmond House, in this city; but for want of testimony was released.
Subsequently he was detected in an attempt to draw his own pay as a Lieutenant in McCulloch Rangers twice or thrice in one month.
For this offence the
Government authorities were lenient with him, and contented themselves with dismissing him from the service.
Since that time he has led quite a fast life, indulging in the various amusements which contribute to the pastime of men of the world.
When arrested he had in his possession some seven hundred dollars, fraudulently obtained.
He is from the
South, but formerly of
Maryland, and is a young man of pleasing address.
