CASTELO DA LOUSA
Alentejo, Portugal.
A Roman fort (23.5 x 20 m) on the left bank of the
Guadiana, 6 km SW of Mourão, established in the period
of Augustus. The work, unmatched in Portugal, is important evidence for the military architecture of the period. Outside the fort, on the slope, are various structures still incompletely excavated, which may have served
as lodgings for the garrison. The finds are in the Museum
of Évora.
