EGUILLES
Bouches-du-Rhône, France.
Situated 5 km W of Aix-en-Provence. Near the modern
village is the oppidum of Pierredon. Incompletely excavated, the site was occupied in the Iron Age and abandoned, like the other Provencal sites in the same category
(Entremont, Constantine), at the end of the 2d c. B.C.,
when the Salyes were defeated by the Roman legions. A
circuit wall of dry stone has been found, of the same
type as that at Entremont, with gates and an interior
cross-wall but without projecting towers; there are also
remains of dwellings. The objects found are mainly indigenous but include a few Campanian sherds. Also noteworthy are some fragments of carved limestone similar
to those found at
Entremont. F. SALYIAT
