VISEU
Beira Alta, Portugal.
The absence
of literary and epigraphical references, as well as the
lack of remains other than Roman blocks reused in the
Romanesque cathedral, suggests that this was a village
of little importance. In the lower part of the town, now
within the urban district, is the Cava de Viriato, an
encampment of the Republican era. It is a polygon, with
well-preserved walls of compacted earth. No structures
have been found inside, and few remains. The encampment, perhaps a camp of Julius Caesar, was the point of convergence of some of the main roads of the district.
