Vetulonia, Vetulonium

or Vetulonii. An ancient city of Etruria, and one of the twelve cities of the Etruscan confederation. (See Etruria.) From this city the Romans are said to have borrowed the insignia of their magistrates—the fasces, sella curulis, and toga praetexta—as well as the use of the brazen trumpet in war (Dionys. iii. 51; Strabo, p. 220; Flor. i. 5; Sil. Ital. viii. 483). Its site has been discovered near a small village called Magliano, between the river Osa and the Albegna, and about eight miles inland.
