PRAEFECTUS CASTRO´RUM

PRAEFECTUS CASTRO´RUM praefect of the camp, is first mentioned in the reign of Augustus. There was one to each legion. Hence there were often more than one in a camp. (Veil. Pat. 2.112; Tac. Ann. 1.20, 14.37.) We learn from Vegetius (2.10) that it was his duty to attend to all matters connected with the making of a camp, such as the vallum, fossa, &c., and also to the internal economy of it. He seems to have taken rank between the tribunes and the centurions. (Cf. Wilmanns in Eph. Epig. 1.81 ff.)
