HELLANO´DICAE

HELLANO´DICAE (Ἑλλανοδίκαι), the judges in the Olympic and Nemean games, of whom an account is given under OLYMPIA. The same name was also given to the judges or court-martial in the Lacedaemonian army (Xen. Rep. Lac. 13, § 11); and they were probably first called by this name when Sparta was at the head of the Greek confederacy. As the name implies, their jurisdiction must have been international, not exclusively Spartan. According to Gilbert (Staatsalterth. i. pp. 65, 81), they were not military officers, but attached to the army in a civil capacity, like the κρεοδαίτης, ταμίαι, and λαφυροπῶλαι.
