According to Bohlen (Ind.
vol. i. p. 26), the name is a corruption of Podukeri
(the new town), (Comp. also Ritter, vol. v. p. 516.)
It is not unlikely that the name has been preserved in the [p. 2.643]
(written in the Tamil language Puduchchery
). Ptolemy mentions another place of the same name in the northern part of the island of Taprobane (7.4.10).
