PODO´CA

PODO´CA (Ποδώκη or Πουδώκη, Ptol 7.1.14; Ποδούκη, Peripl. Mar. Erythr. 100.60), a place near the coast of Malabar, not far from the Cávery river. According to Bohlen (Ind. vol. i. p. 26), the name is a corruption of Podukeri (the new town), (Comp. also Ritter, vol. v. p. 516.) It is not unlikely that the name has been preserved in the [p. 2.643] present Pondickerry (written in the Tamil language Puduchchery). Ptolemy mentions another place of the same name in the northern part of the island of Taprobane (7.4.10).
