March—, Appropriated three hundred dollars for aid to soldiers' families. During the years 1864 and 1865 money was appropriated to pay aid to soldiers' families and bounties to volunteers. Nahant furnished forty-two men for the war, which was a surplus of five over and above all demands. One was a commissioned officer. The whole amount of money appropriated and expended by the town on account of the war, exclusive of State aid, was six thousand five hundred and eight dollars ($6,508.00). The amount of money raised and expended by the town in payment of State aid to the families of volunteers during the four years of the war, and which was afterwards reimbursed by the Commonwealth, was as follows: In 1861, $32.40; in 1862, $338.67; in 1863, $506.71; in 1864, $112.00; in 1865, $48.00. Total amount, $1,037.78. During the whole of the war the ladies of Nahant held meetings to make under-clothing for the soldiers, which, with boxes of provisions and small stores, were sent to the Sanitary Commission.
