[92] were authorized to pay a bounty of one hundred dollars to each person who shall volunteer for nine months service, and be mustered in and credited to the quota of the town; and to authorize the treasurer to borrow money sufficient to pay the same. 1863. A meeting was held on the 22d of September, at which the following vote was passed:—
Voted, To raise the sum of two thousand seven hundred and thirty-five dollars and ninety cents, as the proportion of the town of New Marlborough, for reimbursing the Commonwealth for bounty money, assumed by said Commonwealth; and appropriate the same for the payment of said proportion, in accordance with section 9, chapter 218, of the Acts of the Legislature of 1863.1864. At the town-meeting held April 4th, five thousand seven hundred and fifty dollars were appropriated ‘to pay bounties to volunteers who have enlisted, or may enlist,’ to fill the quota of the town,—said bounty to be paid when the volunteer is mustered in and credited; and ‘to reimburse those who have paid money on subscription for the above purpose.’ Another meeting was held on the 4th of June, at which the town voted to instruct the selectmen to enlist thirty men, ‘in anticipation of a future call of the President of the United States for more men for the military service;’ and the town-treasurer was authorized to borrow money to pay the same. On the 5th of December, Grove Gaylord and Warren Walker were chosen a committee ‘to procure men enough for the military service to clear the town from draft, in anticipation of a future call from the President.’ The treasurer was authorized to borrow money. 1865. At a town-meeting held on the 6th of March, it was voted to ‘raise twenty-seven hundred dollars, to be paid to those who have paid, or help to pay, commutation-money; and that said money be paid by the treasurer of the town to said persons, on the 1st of January, 1866.’ New Marlborough furnished, according to the returns made by the town-clerk in 1870, one hundred and fifty-nine men for the war, which, including the men who paid commutation, is
