The first legal town-meeting to act upon matters relating to the war was held on the 26th of April, at which it was voted to give each volunteer belonging to Waltham a uniform, and ten dollars a month for five months when in active service, including the ‘Waltham Light Dragoons.’ Six thousand dollars were appropriated for these purposes. Resolved, That if any attempt is made by way of trustee process to take from any individual the amount thus voted, the treasurer be directed to pay over the sum in disregard of such process, and that the selectmen be instructed to insert an article in the warrant for the next town-meeting, to see what measures the town will take in reference to the party in whose name it is made, and the attorney by whom it is instituted.July 22, Voted, to pay State aid to the families of volunteers as provided by law, and five thousand dollars were appropriated for that purpose. 1862.
