AUGUSTUS MONS

the name given to the Caelian hill by the senate in 27 A.D., in gratitude to Tiberius for his generosity in repairing the ravages of a great fire on that hill, and in recognition of the miraculous preservation of a statue of the emperor (Suet. Tib. 48; Tac. Ann. iv. 64). There is no record of the use of the name, and it probably did not survive after the death of Tiberius even in official documents.
