I. A t. t. of magistrates, to declare, publish, make known a decree, ordinance, etc.; hence, to establish, decree, ordain by proclamation (cf.: praecipio, mando, jubeo).
A. In gen., with ut or ne: “consulem edicere, ut senatus senatusconsulto ne obtemperet ... edicere est ausus, ut senatus ad vestitum rediret,” Cic. Pis. 8; so id. Vatin. 14; id. Q.
