Academĭca

or Academĭcae Quaestiōnes. A treatise of Cicero, written B.C. 45, originally in two books, named after Catulus and Lucullus, but subsequently in four books. Of the first edition, the second book (Lucullus) has come down to us; of the second (Academica Posteriora), the first part of the first book, and fragments exist. The Lucullus contains an account of the teachings of Antiochus and Philo regarding knowledge; the beginning of the second edition, besides some general observations, gives a sketch of the history of philosophy from Socrates to Arcesilaüs. An excellent edition of the Academica, in English, is that of Reid (1885).
