A Keltic word. The military cloak of the Roman soldiers, which consisted of a fourcornered piece of cloth worn over the armour and

fastened upon the shoulder by a clasp. It was a symbol of war, as the toga was a symbol of peace, so that sagati=milites, as opposed to togati, “civilians.”

A saddle-cloth placed under a saddle of any sort (Veget. Vet. iii. 59, 2).
