DEIGMA

DEIGMA (δεῖγμα), a particular place in the Peiraeus, as well as in the harbours of other states, where merchants exposed samples of their goods for sale. (Harpocrat., Hesych. sub voce Pollux, 9.34; Aristoph. Kn. 979; Dem. c. Lacr. p. 932.29; c. Polycl. p. 1214.24; Theophr. Char. 23.) The samples themselves were also called deigmata. (Plut. Dem. 23; Boeckh, P. E. p. 58.)
